How swamp cooler works

How it Works

A swamp cooler uses the basic principle of evaporation along with simple technology and electrical power to create cold airflow. First, one motor pumps water into pads of a fibrous, absorbent substance similar to hay, called cellulose. Then another motor powers a fan that pushes air through the pad, which is always pregnant with fresh water.

Inside this unit, a centrifugal blower pulls air through the pads of the housing, and discharges it into the space to be cooled through the box-like opening in the front. Switches on the front panel usually control blower speed (HI-MED-LO) and a small pump motor inside the housing. A water line supplies water to a shallow reservoir in the bottom of this unit. As water evaporates, addition of make-up water is controlled by a simple float-valve.

How do I know if a swamper will work for me?

The easiest, rule-of-thumb, way to tell if you will be satisfied with a swamp cooler, is to visit your local building supply and home improvement center or hardware store. If they do not stock evaporative coolers and the parts to maintain them, it's most likely because there is not a big demand in your area.

Home cooling

Evaporative coolers are energy efficient since the blower motor only has to move the air and not compress a refrigerant gas as required in an air conditioner. The blower motor in a residential unit is typically 1/3 to 3/4 horsepower, while water pumps may be smaller than 1/20th horsepower. When compared to 3 and 5 horsepower compressors needed for refrigerated air, plus the fans for cooling and condensing, evaporative coolers require only about one-tenth as much energy for home cooling, a large annual saving on your electric bill.

The key to efficient evaporative cooling

The key to efficient evaporative cooling lays with the design of the cooler pads and relative humidity of the ambient air. While little can be done to control humidity outside the home, much research has gone into the design of cooler pads and materials. Aspen pads are effective and inexpensive, easy for the home owner to change, and are biodegradable when disposed of properly.

Maintaining Your Evaporative Cooler

Some consumers are turned off by evaporative swamp coolers because they think they're more difficult to maintain than air conditioners.  While swamp coolers do require periodic maintenance, this usually only involves draning and cleaning the unit in order to prevent sediment build-up. 
However, also keep in mind that the more frequently you use your swamp cooler, the more maintenace it will need.  In hot, dry climates, you'll probably be using the unit several hours a day.  If this is the case, remember to check the unit's filters, reservoir, pump, and pads regularly.  Doing so will ensure proper cooling and years of hassle-free operation.

This is a FABULOUS product. I based my purchase on the reviews of this item. I had a similar product a few years ago and it doesnt compare to this as well as the other one being almost double this price. The cooler came a day PRIOR to the estimated delivery date.WOW........
 For those of you that are young or have not had the experience of a "swamp cooler", they tend to have a musty smell to them. I solved this problem by purchasing a AOLAN evaporative air cooler. It is intended to clip on the vents of your air conditioning unit. I clip mine on the bottem lever of the cooler on the lowest setting and it gives off a slight fragrance with no musty smell whatsoever. My hats off to the seller, AOLAN for carrying the product and the reviews that allowed me to purchase the best product out there. Happy Happy Happy!!!!

Low price and high quality coolers in China

Low price, very effective in low humidity. Has a strong fan when not using the cooling feature. Timer works well. Has an oscillating feature,  A plastic body that cannot rust like those made of sheet metal or tin.
It's been in the high 90s to the low 100's here in the China, with low humidity and it's kept whatever room it is in cool enough to not have to turn on the AC.
It's no air conditioner, but it's a low in cost [to purchase and to run]alternative you could even say was an "eco-friendly" way to stay comfortable in the summer. But then, my friends had to talk me out of buying a wringer washing machine, so my opinion is based on my personal preference for simplicity and old fashioned ways of doing things.
Take my review as you will. It does what it says it will. If you have frequent high humidity, it won't be effective and the company tells you that so be forewarned. I find it to be a great buy and it runs quietly as well.

Environmental friendly air coolers

Eco-Cooler Jet Stream Range
250 to 750 Watt.
This system has beenmanufactured for ease of use. It is an air-cooled system based around the rising
sun super reflector. It has 2 x 125mm flanges. One is mounted on the ignitor housing,
which has small holes punched on one side and 4 large jet holes on the lamp holder
side. At the opposite end of the reflector there is one large hole with a 125mm flange.
round the bottom of the reflector is a heavy duty galvanised frame which houses the 4mm toughened
safety glass, which has a Class A impact performance to BS 6206 and offers greatly increased resistance to sudden temperature changes compared with annealed glass.
   
 It can also be used in service within the temperature range from 280 degrees
Celsius down to minus 70 degrees Celsius without affecting its performance and can also
withstand sudden shock temperature of approximately 200 degrees Celsius.
If ever the glass is broken it disintegrates into relatively harmless small pieces.
This framework has a rubber seal to protect the glass edge and to seal the whole unit so that
the hot air is never in your room. The framework drops down via two wing nuts and slides to one
side for easy cleaning of the glass.
The air blows vi the ignitor housing and out over the length of the lamp through the flange at
the other end of the reflector.
Recent tests showed that with an anbient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, and using a 600
watt system with a 125mm extractor fan, the temperature recorded was 27 degrees Celsius at a
distance of 0.5 metre below the glass.
The Eco-cooler Jet Stream systems are manufactured to a high standard using quality components.
All control boxes are manufactured from 1mm steel and are epoxy powder coated in blue.
All boxes are vented at the top and bottom to allow airflow to ensure cool running, giving a
longer component life.
All Eco-Cooler Jet Stream systems are manufactured in accordance to BS EN 60598-1.
The external cable is manufactured from rubber neoprene 1.5mm H07RNF. The internal wire is
high temperature silicone 1.5mm.
These systems come with 2 metres of cable from the moulded plug into the box and 4 metres
out of the box to the reflector. Longer lengths can be built into the system upon request, which
will be charged at cost.
These systems can be remoted as far as 150 metres!
This system comes with a choice of reflectors of a parabolic design. The material is highly
polished anodised dimpled aluminium with a vented 3mm aluminium heat sink running along
the top of the reflectors to draw heat away from the lamp. The reflectors give a very even spread
of light.
The ignitor is mounted in it's own housing behind the lamp, which is detachable from the
reflector via two wing nuts for ease of use.
These systems can be manufactured for almost any electric supply.
Re-strike of hot lamps on mains failure
This is dependent on temperature and lamp type.
The re-strike time is between 30 seconds and 20 minutes. If the lamp is not relit after 20
minutes, then the system will shut down as the lamp is obviously faulty.
Eco-Cooler Jet Stream comes with a 4 year warranty on all components excluding the lamp, so
long as the equipment has not been tampered with or altered in any form.
These systems are supplied with a choice of Sylvania Grolux or Osram Nav-t super lamps. They
are also suitable for use with metal halide lamps with the exception of the 750 watt

Overview Of Evaporative Air Coolers

If you ask an older relative if they have heard of an evaporative cooler, they may say no. But chances are they would recognize the idea behind the technology. Before air conditioning or other cooler types existed, people would sleep outside on a screened in porch to try to stay cool at night. They would often hang damp sheets over the screens in an attempt to cool the air. As the hot air passed through the sheet, it was cooled. And then the cool air would slowly circulate, relieving some of the heat for the sleepers.

How Evaporative Air Coolers Work

The same idea exists today in the form of evaporative coolers. These machines are wonderful cooling mechanisms for people who live in hot, dry climates. They are also known by the name swamp coolers, but that can be misleading because they actually won't work at all in swampy, humid conditions. The name probably came from the way that evaporative coolers actually add humidity to the air. But in fact, evaporative coolers need dry, hot air to work because in order for the air to be cooled, it has to be able to pick up (evaporate) some of the water. If the air is already saturated, it won't pick up any more water and it won't be cooled.
Here's how evaporative coolers work; the machine is composed of a fan that pulls the hot dry air inside the cooler, where it is passed through damp pads. The pads are kept damp by a pump that circulates water through the machine. As the dry air picks up some of the water, its temperature drops, sometimes by as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the climate. The cooler air is then blown into the room. An added bonus of an evaporative cooler is that the pads that cool the air also filter it. As the air passes through the pads, dirt, dust, allergens and other pollutants are captured in the fibers of the pads. So you'll be breathing cleaner, cooler air.

Choosing an Evaporative Air Cooler over an Air Conditioner

If you're wondering why you should choose an evaporative cooler over a traditional air conditioner, there's one more reason we haven't covered yet. The cost to run an evaporative cooler can be as little as 1/10 the amount it costs to run an air conditioner. In fact, some community power companies in hot, dry climates will actually offer residents a rebate if they install an evaporative cooler because they recognize the effective, efficient cooling capabilities of the technology. Evaporative cooling provides 100% fresh, cool air continuously while traditional
refrigerated air conditioning utilizes a closed system that recirculates the same stale
dry air over and over. Constant air movement of the evaporative cooler pushes hot
air out removing dust, pollen, smoke, odor, and pollution and replaces it with cool
fresh air.


 
Unlike air conditioning, evaporative cooling does not require an airtight structure to operate at maximum
efficiency. In fact, you need to allow your home to "breathe."

Evaporative cooling is also an environmentally-friendly alternative to air conditioning since it has no CFC's
or HCFC's.
Energy SavingsEvaporative coolers use 70% less power than air conditioning.
Example:
A 1500 square foot home is located in Phoenix, Arizona where the dry bulb temperature is 107, the wet
bulb temperature is 71, and the wet bulb depression is 36.

Air Conditioner
Assuming air conditioning supplies 500 square feet of cooling per ton, 3 tons of air conditioning would be
required to cool a 1500 square foot home. Since an air conditioner would probably run most of the time in
this climate, its electric usage would be approximately 3.6 Kw per hour depending on your utility.

Evaporative Cooler
Using an Essick, Champion or Tradewinds cooler with a minimum of 5000 CFM and ¾ horsepower motor,
total power consumption (motor and pump combined) would be approximately 0.991 Kw per hour.

Results
If the air conditioner and the evaporative cooler ran for a comparable period of time, the ratio of energy
for the evaporative cooler to the air conditioner would be 0.991 Kw per hour to 3.6 Kw per hour, or 0.275.
This means the evaporative cooler would use 72 ½% less power than an air conditioner to cool the same
area in the same environment.

Evaporative Cooling Free Air System
How are the savings achieved?
An Aolan cooler free air system provides a constant flow of attemperated air between 25°C and 30°C.  No refrigeration is used – the air is cooled by evaporative cooling when ambient temperatures are high and is heated by recirculation of air from the server exhaust when the ambient temperature is low.  No refrigeration is used as all of the cooling is achieved using evaporative cooling.  This results in energy saving
in excess of 90% compared with traditional Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC’s)
1 – Fresh air is brought into the system though primary filtration and wetted filter pads
2 – Evaporative cooling operates during warm periods
3 – Low energy axial fan air distribution
4 – Patented control system controls air supply temperature
5 – Air flow is matched to density of cooling required

System Design
The air flow required of the system is dependent upon the total IT load and the server design.  Using a typical ΔT of 10C a single Aolan cooler  CREC can support a load of 35kW.  The systems can be either fixed or variable flow.
The low energy air distribution system uses axial fans which can accommodate most applications.  Where raised floors are used, the overall design, in particular the floor grill numbers and position, should reflect the pressure drops and rack cooling load density.
Most systems are controlled centrally.  This allows fully automatic control and identification of any fault conditions.
Server and IT operating conditions
The following must be taken into account when providing a cooling solution:
Temperature:  In Europe an Aolan Cooler  can provide 100% compliance against the latest ASHRAE[1] standards and meet all manufacturer environmental specifications. Some early main frame systems require close control and evaporative cooling is not suitable.
Relative Humidity:  In Europe an Aolan Cooler can provide 99% compliance against ASRAE allowable conditions.  Older equipment such as paper tape and magnetic tape systems are less tolerant and evaporative cooling is not suitable.
Dust:  The filter pads provide an adequate level of filtration for modern IT equipment with sealed bearings and closed drives.
Redundancy – The required redundancy is met using the modular system.

Where can Aolan Cooler be used?
Aolan Coolers require ducting from an outside wall or roof.  Modern data centres and server rooms can easily accommodate both data rack cooling and UPS room cooling.
